May 5, 2004

 

A regular session of the Pawtucket Board of License Commissioners is held Wednesday, May 5, 2004, at 6:50 p.m. in the City Council Chamber, City Hall, 137 Roosevelt Avenue, Pawtucket, RI. 

 

Present – Chairman Barry, Councilors Bray, Carr, Clemente, Grebien, Hodge, Hoyas, Moran and Wildenhain.

 

Absent – 0.

 

Chairman Barry presides.

 

The reading of the records of April 21, 2004, is dispensed with and the records are approved as prepared by the Clerk.

 

A public hearing is held on the following application for license, which was advertised for a hearing at this time, is taken up:

 

CLASS B (Victualer) –

 

Candilejas Corp. d/b/a Candilejas Café & Lounge (Transfer from Malibu Bar & Grill, Inc. d/b/a Malibu Bar & Grill) 602 Smithfield Avenue, LIC# 10326

 

STIPULATIONS:

 

Entertainment allowed 1 day per week on either Fridays or Saturdays.

Detail police officer on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Back doors are to be kept closed at all times.

 

Speaking in favor is Joseph Montalbano, Attorney representing the applicant.  Also present is Juan Cardono, President of Candilejas Corp.

 

Mr. Montalbano states that the applicant is requesting entertainment on Friday and Saturday nights.

 

Councilor Clemente states that he has met with Mr. Cardono prior to the public hearing and asked Mr. Cardono what type of business he will be running.

 

Mr. Cardono states that this will be a family type atmosphere and not a bar.  There will be an Argentinean atmosphere and the pool table will be taken out.  He is seeking an older crowd and has already painted the outside of the building.

 

Councilor Clemente compliments Mr. Cardono on the work he is doing and welcomes a new restaurant to the neighborhood.  Councilor Clemente asks Mr. Cardono for his help in keeping the neighborhood clean.

 

Councilor Clemente states that he will allow entertainment 2 days per week.

 

Mr. Cardono states that he can guarantee that he will not have the problems that previous owner had.

 

Councilor Clemente asks that the noise level be kept down at this establishment.

 

Councilor Clemente states that he will keep the stipulations on at this time and if times proves that there are no problems, the Council will consider lifting the stipulations at a future date.

 

There are no other speakers.

THE CHAIR RECOGNIZES COUNCILOR CLEMENTE.

 

With majority consent of the Council, Councilor Clemente introduces the following communication:

 

Claim of Arcaro, Belilove and Kolodney, objecting to the transfer of Class B liquor license of Malibu Bar & Grill Inc. d/b/a Malibu Bar & Grill, 602 Smithfield Avenue to Candilejas Corp. d/b/a Candilejas Café & Lounge, in the total amount of $4,152.17.

 

Upon motion made by Councilor Clemente, seconded by Councilor Bray, the following communication is READ AND ORDERED FILED:

Upon motion made by Councilor Clemente, seconded by Councilor Hodge, the following license is APPROVED WITH THE FOLLOWING STIPULATIONS AND PENDING THE SETTLEMENT OF ALL OUTSTANDING CLAIMS on a unanimous voice vote:

With majority consent of the Council, Councilor Moran introduces the following communication:

 

Communications from His Honor Mayor James E. Doyle, to Simone Tassone and Florence Plante, regarding the St. Patrick’s Day event at the Celtic Pub, 755 Broadway.

 

Upon motion made by Councilor Moran, seconded by Councilor Hodge, the following communication is READ AND ORDERED FILED:

THE CHAIR RECOGNIZES COUNCILOR MORAN.

 

With majority consent of the Council, the following motion made by Councilor Moran, seconded by Councilor Hodge, is PASSED on a unanimous voice vote:

 

The Clerk is instructed to send a communication to Thomas Brennan, President, Celtic Pub, Inc. enclosing the communications from the Mayor and asking him to forward his opinion of the events back to the City Council.

 

Upon motion made by Councilor Bray, seconded by Councilor Hodge, the meeting is adjourned at 7:00 p.m.
