October 8, 2003

 

A regular session of the Pawtucket Board of License Commissioners is held Wednesday, October 8, 2003, at 7:01 p.m. in the City Council Chamber, City Hall, 137 Roosevelt Avenue, Pawtucket, RI. 

 

Present – Chairman Barry, Councilors Carr, Clemente, Grebien, Hoyas, Moran and Wildenhain.

 

Absent – Councilors Bray and Hodge.

 

Chairman Barry presides.

 

The reading of the records of September 24, 2003, is dispensed with and the records are approved as prepared by the Clerk.

 

A public hearing is held on the following application for license, which was advertised for a hearing at this time, is taken up:

 

CLASS B (Victualer) –

 

CV Island, Inc. d/b/a Checkmate Pub Pizza (Transfer from Checkmate Pizza, Inc. d/b/a Checkmate Pizza) 1 Garden Street, LIC# 10322

 

PREVIOUS STIPULATIONS:

 

No Entertainment

Hours of Operation shall be 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 a.m.

The bar area shall have no more that a seating capacity of six (6)

 

Speaking in favor is Vince Mitchell, attorney representing applicants, CV Island, Inc.

 

Also present is Robert Ameen, Attorney representing current owners, Checkmate Pizza, Inc.

 

Mr. Mitchell states that his clients would like the stipulations amended to include an upright string piano on the premises.

 

Councilor Clemente asks if applicants have any prior experience with the restaurant business and serving alcohol.

 

Mr. Mitchell states that his clients have a restaurant business in Brockton, MA.  However, they are residents of Pawtucket and plan on being on hand at this restaurant 95% of the time.  They are also keeping all of the current staff.  The applicants are TIPS Certified.

 

Applicants Alcino Vieira and Jose Mendes state that they would like to hire a musician to play the piano during dinner hours.

 

Councilor Clemente asks if they would mind a stipulation being placed on the license to limit the piano entertainment during the dinner hours and no later than 9:00 p.m. on Saturdays, Sundays, and Holidays.

 

Mr. Vieira and Mr. Mendes state that they have no objection to this stipulation, as the piano is just to provide atmosphere.

 

There are no other speakers.

 

The Hearing is closed.

 

THE CHAIR RECOGNIZES COUNCILOR CLEMENTE.

 

Upon motion made by Councilor Clemente, seconded by Councilor Grebien, the following license is APPROVED with the FOLLOWING STIPULATIONS:

 

CLASS B (Victualer) –

STIPULATIONS:

 

The only form of entertainment allowed shall be a piano during dinner hours and no later than 9:00 p.m. on Saturdays, Sundays, and Holidays.

Hours of Operation shall be 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 a.m.

The bar area shall have no more that a seating capacity of six (6)

THE FOLLOWING LICENSE IS APPROVED ON A UNANIMOUS VOICE VOTE:

 

CLASS F (Beer & Wine)

 

Petition of St. Edward’s Church for a license to sell Beer and Wine at a Bazaar in the Church Hall, Weeden Street, on Saturday, November 8, 2003, from 12:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., and on Sunday, November 9, 2003, from 12:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m., LIC# 124

 

Upon motion made by Councilor Grebien, seconded by Councilor Hoyas, the meeting is adjourned at 7:10 p.m.
