City Council, August 9, 1995

A regular session of the City Council is held Wednesday, August 9, 1995, at eight three o’clock p.m. All the members are present except Councilor Demopulos and President Barry presides.

The reading of the records of July 5 and 19, 1995, is dispensed with and the records are approved as prepared by the Clerk.

Upon Motion made by Councilor Vieira, seconded by Councilor Kinder the *Consent Agenda is approved on a unanimous voice vote:

The Clerk is instructed to send a communication to Councilor James E. Doyle, Chairman of the Finance Committee, and the City Council Finance Committee, requesting that they open the proposals for the actuarial study for the police and fire pension plans and make a recommendation to the full Council at the next City Council meeting.

With majority consent of the Council, the following Motion made by Councilor Hodge, seconded by Councilor Kinder, is passed on a unanimous voice vote:

The Clerk is instructed to send a communication to Dr. Emile M. Chevrette, Superintendent of Schools, regarding the requests for waivers of the residency requirement for three spanish teachers who were recently appointed by the School Committee.

It was noted that Ms. Enid Negron had recently purchased a home in Providence, however, there were no reasons given by the other two candidates for not moving into Pawtucket. The Council would like to know their reasons, if any.

THE CHAIR RECOGNIZES COUNCILOR MORAN.

With majority consent of the Council, the following Motion made by Councilor Moran, seconded by Councilor Kinder, is passed on a unanimous voice vote:

The Clerk is instructed to send a communication to Ronald J. Leitao, Acting Director of Public Works, regarding the problem of weeds growing along the city streets, curbs, traffic islands, etc.

The Council is asking that he be made aware of this eyesore and is requesting his recommendation for a possible solution which must be taken to eliminate the weeds, which are growing out of control.

The Council is suggesting the possibility of chemical spraying to stop the growth and to also inhibit the spreading of these weeds.

THE FOLLOWING COMMUNICATION IS REFERRED TO THE FINANCE COMMITTEE.

Communication from Joseph A. Capineri, Esq., to Pawtucket City Council. (87 Sabin Associates)

Petition for SECOND HAND SHOP LICENSE of Michael J. Cordeiro d/b/a MC Skate Shop, 50 Exchange Street, Tax Assessor’s Plat 43, Lot 102, to keep a shop for the purpose of purchasing and selling second hand articles, specifically, used skates, helmets, clothing, athletic equipment, etc., which was advertised for a hearing at this time, is taken up:

Speaking in favor is Michael J. Cordeiro, 94 Hillcrest Avenue, Pawtucket, RI.

Mr. Cordeiro states that he will sell new and used equipment. He will be doing skate sharpening, and he will be renting skates for Lynch Arena by November.

He will be open seven days a week. The hours will be Monday through Thursday from 11:00 am - 8:00 pm, Friday 9:00 am - 7:00 pm, Saturday 8:00 am - 7:00 pm, and Sunday 9:00 am - 5:00 pm.

The parking lot is in the back and there are 16 spaces for cars.

There are no other speakers.

Upon Motion made by Councilor Vieira, seconded by Councilor Kinder, the following application is GRANTED on a unanimous voice vote:

Speaking in favor is Josephine & Henry Ogbeide, 44 August Street, Providence, RI.

Ms. Ogbeide states that they previously owned a business in Providence.

The hours will be Monday through Friday, from 9:00 - 6:30 or 7:00 pm, Saturday from 10:00 am - 5:00 pm and closed on Sundays.

They will be the only employees.

She states that there is parking behind the building and on the street.

Councilor Bray states that she must clear up the police matter with the Chief.

Upon Motion made by Councilor Bray, seconded by Councilor Hodge, the following petition is LAID ON THE TABLE on a unanimous voice vote:

With majority consent of the Council, the following Motion made by Councilor Bray, seconded by Councilor Hodge, is passed on a unanimous voice vote:

The Clerk is instructed to send a communication to Frank A. Rendine, P.E., Director of Zoning and Code Enforcement, regarding the building at 919 Main Street.

The Council is requesting that he inspect this building, paying particular attention to the building’s electrical and plumbing systems.

Petition for SECOND HAND SHOP LICENSE of Margaret E. Trott d/b/a Maw and Paw’s Used Treasures, 618 Broadway, Tax Assessor’s Plat 6, Lot 215, to keep a shop for the purpose of purchasing and selling second hand articles, specifically, used clothing, dishes, furniture, etc., which was advertised for a hearing at this time, is taken up:

Speaking in favor is Margaret E. Trott, 175 North Bend Street, Pawtucket, RI.

Ms. Trott states that this is her first time being in the business with her husband.

The hours will be Monday through Saturday, from 9:00 am - 7:00 pm, and no Sundays.

There are no other speakers.
