Interscholastic Athletics
INTERSCHOLASTIC ATHLETICS
The Middletown School Committee encourages an interscholastic athletic program for Middletown students that balances academic commitment and high standards with the need for social and emotional growth that can be achieved through the lessons of teamwork and commitment of interscholastic athletics. The School Committee recognizes that interscholastic athletics are organized under the R.I. Interscholastic League and is supervised and coordinated on a daily basis by the Middletown High School Principal. The Committee hereby limits its usual role to the adopting of job descriptions, appointment and dismissal of all head coaches, assistant coaches and volunteer coaches and other such personnel, authorizing interscholastic athletic teams and programs and determining budgetary support for these programs. Nothing in this policy shall limit the School Committee or the Superintendent from acting on the following issues:
● gross negligence
● health safety of the students, athletes, coaches, other personnel
● protection of buildings and grounds
● and such matters shall be jointly recommended by the Superintendent of Schools and the School Committee Chairman to the School Committee pursuant to Interscholastic athletics.
Ensuring that the Interscholastic program is of high quality and preserves the integrity of the Mission of the Middletown Public Schools, the Middletown School Committee hereby authorizes the Middletown High School Principal to establish regulations for student athletic eligibility, standards of sportsmanship and conduct for coaches and players assuring the health and safety of athletes, coaches and spectators and other such regulations necessary for implementation of this policy and consistent with the rules of the Rhode Island Interscholastic League.
