STUDENT TEACHERS
1. It shall be the policy of the School Committee to offer student-training experiences to students who would enter the teaching profession. In addition to offering value to prospective teachers, these experiences provide the Middletown School Department with the opportunity to evaluate prospective new teachers and provide educational liaison with the schools of education.
2. The Superintendent shall enter agreements with approved colleges and universities for the placement of student teachers.
3. Student teaching is a period of guided teaching during which the student takes responsibility for a group of learners over a span of consecutive weeks.
4. The cooperating teacher is an individual whose classroom is used as a training facility to provide professional experiences for student teachers, and who has the day-by-day responsibility of guiding these experiences.
5. Student teachers in the secondary schools shall not be assigned to the same classes in consecutive semesters.
6. At all levels, only one student teacher shall be assigned to a cooperating teacher in a school year.
7. The evaluation of the class work of the student teacher shall be the principle responsibility of the cooperating teacher, but other professional staff who are in a position to accurately comment on the student teacher’s performance may do so.
8. The grades obtained by students taught by a student teacher shall be determined through the cooperative decision of the student teacher and the cooperating teacher.
9. Normally, the student teacher’s daily schedule shall include time for observing other activities that are pertinent to teacher training.
10. When a student teacher has a teaching period, the cooperating teacher is expected to spend at least some part of that time in the classroom to provide control, guidance, and evaluation.
11. The class schedule of a student teacher shall be subject to the approval of the principal of the school.
12. In secondary schools, student teachers normally shall be responsible for no more than three classes during each school day.
13. Normally, secondary schools shall place no more than two student teachers each semester in each of the basic subject areas of English, social studies, foreign languages, science, and mathematics.
