Student Teachers

 

STUDENT TEACHERS 

1. It shall be the policy of the School Committee to offer student-training experiences to  students who would enter the teaching profession. In addition to offering value to  prospective teachers, these experiences provide the Middletown School Department  with the opportunity to evaluate prospective new teachers and provide educational  liaison with the schools of education. 

2. The Superintendent shall enter agreements with approved colleges and universities for  the placement of student teachers. 

3. Student teaching is a period of guided teaching during which the student takes  responsibility for a group of learners over a span of consecutive weeks. 

4. The cooperating teacher is an individual whose classroom is used as a training facility to  provide professional experiences for student teachers, and who has the day-by-day  responsibility of guiding these experiences. 

5. Student teachers in the secondary schools shall not be assigned to the same classes in  consecutive semesters. 

6. At all levels, only one student teacher shall be assigned to a cooperating teacher in a  school year. 

7. The evaluation of the class work of the student teacher shall be the principle  responsibility of the cooperating teacher, but other professional staff who are in a  position to accurately comment on the student teacher’s performance may do so. 

8. The grades obtained by students taught by a student teacher shall be determined  through the cooperative decision of the student teacher and the cooperating teacher. 

9. Normally, the student teacher’s daily schedule shall include time for observing other activities that are pertinent to teacher  training. 

10. When a student teacher has a teaching period, the cooperating teacher is expected to  spend at least some part of that time in the classroom to provide control, guidance, and  evaluation. 

11. The class schedule of a student teacher shall be subject to the approval of the principal of  the school. 

12. In secondary schools, student teachers normally shall be responsible for no more than  three classes during each school day. 

13. Normally, secondary schools shall place no more than two student teachers each  semester in each of the basic subject areas of English, social studies, foreign languages,  science, and mathematics. 

14. The principal shall require the student teacher to carry his or her fair share of non-class  responsibilities and to participate in professional activities such as parent-teacher  meetings.
