There are a wide variety of responsibilities which come with being the Virtual High School Advisor. The list below is not inclusive of all responsibilities, but is a general overview of expectations for the position. The majority of student activities require planning time and/or supervision beyond the school day, the stipend for the Advisor is in place for this reason.  No additional pay and/or compensations days will be granted for work done in the capacity of the Advisor.  The Advisor must follow all school district policies and regulations and must enforce the rules of Middletown Policies and Procedures, as well, Rhode Island General Law.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

·         The Virtual High School Advisor ensures grade and progress reports for participating students are completed and submitted for administrative purposes within his or her school.  

·         VHS Advisor tracks student progress in NetCourses and acts quickly to correct problems. 

·         VHS Advisor meets regularly with all students enrolled in NetCourses to troubleshoot operational problems and discuss progress. 

·         The VHS Advisor is responsible for parent contact with regard to students’ VHS participation.

·         Recruit and register students in VHS NetCourses.

·         Provide technical and administrative support to students taking VHS NetCourses.

·         Help students schedule their VHS NetCourse.

·         Help students get answers to questions about grades, course requirements, and course assignments as necessary.

·         Check student progress and receive student grades.

·         Act as liaison between student and teacher, school and VHS administration.

·         Send messages about student absences or school vacations, etc. to VHS administration and course instructors.

·         Work with NetCourse instructors in situations where a student needs additional support or has an extended illness or circumstance that interferes with their participation in a NetCourse.

·         Manage attendance procedures for VHS students within their school.

·         Manage student access and enrollment in NetCourses.

·         Distributes materials required for student participation in NetCourses.

·         Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.

·         Good organizational/leadership skills.

·         Meet established deadlines for VHS NetCourses.

·         Communicate with parents.

·         Perform other duties as assigned by the High School Principal or designee.

 

Qualifications

·         Valid R.I. Teaching Certification.

·         Documentation of a clear BCI/FBI report.

·         Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate school events.

·         Work effectively with large and small groups.

·         Basic first aid/CPR (Preferred).

·         Effective, active listening skills.

·         Organizational and problem solving skills.

·         Ability to communicate ideas and directions clearly and effectively both orally and in writing.

·         Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and/or School Committee may deem appropriate or acceptable.
