Under the direction of the High School Principal, the responsibility of the Ten 80 Club Advisor is to instruct team participants so that they develop their robotics and problem-solving skills and inspire students to work effectively together in a fun, competitive environment that test students’ robotics and problem-solving skills and ability to perform problems effectively and creatively under pressure. 

 

Overall Responsibilities

 

There are a wide variety of responsibilities which come with being the Ten 80 Club Advisor.  The list below is not inclusive of all responsibilities, but is a general overview of expectations for the position.  The majority of student activities require planning time and/or supervision beyond the school day, the stipend for the Advisor is in place for this reason. No additional pay and/or compensations days will be granted for work done in the capacity of the Advisor. The Advisor must follow all school district policies and regulations and must enforce the rules of Middletown Policies and Procedures, as well as, Rhode Island General Law.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

·         Reinforce and extend robotics skills and knowledge including mechanical, software programming, and general creative thinking and problem solving. 

·         Develop students’ abilities to apply those skills in an environment that requires students to analyze challenging problems, selecting an appropriate problem-solving approach when some problems can be approached and solve in a variety of ways. 

·         Teach students to work collaboratively and to apply systematic, engineering-like approaches to thinking through problems and weighing possible solutions. 

·         Help students develop the skills to deliver instruction and support to others working on the Ten 80 Club.

·         Prepare and oversee the needed budget.

·         Coordinate and instruct students during regular meetings.

·         Develop a network of robotics specialists and engineers who can share their skills and knowledge with our Robotics students.

·         Assign individual students to appropriate roles on the collaborative Robotics teams, balancing the goals of individual skill development and team competiveness.

·         Act as an ambassador for the team to science and technology teachers, encouraging them to encourage students to participate in Robotics team competitions.

·         Adjust roles and responsibilities as student skills develop and in light of external factors such as issues to ineligibility and student discipline and student inability to attend certain Robotics events.

·         Arrange and coordinate the logistics (travel, permission forms, communications, etc.) associated with attendance at Robotics competitions.

·         Communicate clearly, as necessary, with parents and with other members of the staff (custodians, community services, teachers, etc.) concerning issues connected to the team.

·         Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.

·         Good organizational/leadership skills.

·         Work with other school clubs and organizations in calendar scheduling.

·         Meet established deadlines.

·         Communicate with parents about events.

·         Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal or designee.

 

 

Qualifications

·         Valid R.I. Teaching Certification (Preferred).

·         Documentation of a clear BCI/FBI report.

·         Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate school events.

·         Work effectively with large and small groups.

·         Basic first aid/CPR (Preferred).

·         Effective, active listening skills.

·         Ability to communicate ideas and directions clearly and effectively both orally and in writing.

·         Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and/or School Committee may deem appropriate or acceptable.
