SCHOOL BUS MONITOR

 

MINIMUM

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

1.      High School diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED).

2.      Complete a training program approved by the school bus provider or  previous   experience.

3.      Knowledge of health, safety and emergency procedures.

4.      Ability to work in a friendly manner with co-workers, students, parents, school  department staff and community.

5.      Ability to communicate clearly and concisely.

6.      Work with minimum supervision.

7.      Ability to adapt to unexpected interruptions of the daily work pattern.

8.      Demonstrate enthusiasm and commitment to team efforts and organizational efforts.

9.      Ability to manage students and equipment.

10.  Ability to recognize unusual student behavior and advise supervisor.

11.  Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements.

12.  Positive attitude.

13.  Successful interview.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

To ensure safe loading and unloading of student bus riders.  To be certain all persons and objects are clear of the bus before the bus resumes its route.  Assist the bus driver in maintaining acceptable behavior on the school bus.

 

SCHOOL BUS MONITOR DUTIES:

 

  1. Always get off the bus and perform his/her duties at every school bus stop,  including school drop-off and pick-up.
  2. Take a position 5’ forward of the front bumper and 3’ to the side on door-side drop-off and pick-up.
  3. Receive driver permission before crossing to center of opposite traffic lane to cross students.
  4. Position yourself in the center of the opposite traffic lane and face students for crossing.
  5. Allow driver to signal students when it is safe to cross.  Monitor does not signal students to cross going to or from the bus.  The driver will always signal the students when it is safe to cross going to or coming from the bus.
  6. Always check safety zones before re-boarding the bus.
  7. Assist in controlling student behavior and enforcement of safety rules aboard the bus.
  8. Do not touch students unless assistance is necessary or physical restraint is necessary  to prevent the student from injuring themselves or others.
  9. Do not use obscene language or call student names.
  10. Do not argue with students or parents.
  11. Call in ahead of time if you cannot report for your bus runs.
  12. Responsible to meet your bus at Gaudet School.
  13. Provides accountability for all students who ride the bus.
  14. Assists the bus driver in operation of lifts for wheelchairs.
  15. Have knowledge of basic first aid procedures to apply in situations as necessary.
  16. Consult and follow recommendations of teachers or therapists about proper  interaction, seating, positioning, and caring for handicapped children.
