Guidance Counselor
JOB GOAL: Implement a comprehensive, developmental guidance program that addresses the educational, social, emotional, and career needs of all students.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
A. CURRICULUM
1. Implements the guidance curriculum to all students.
2. Develops a Master Calendar of guidance activities.
3. Establishes a schedule of classroom presentations and activities.
4. Develops lessons and activities that allow students to reach desired skill goals.
5. Assesses the attainment of student skill goals.
6. Assesses the needs of students, teachers and parents as they pertain to the guidance program.
7. Performs such other tasks and assumes other responsibilities as may from time to time be assigned by the Superintendent or his/her designee.
B. INDIVIDUAL STUDENT PLANNING
1. Assists students in assessing and interpreting their abilities, interests, skills and achievements.
2. Assists students in making choices and decisions as part of constructing a personal life plan.
3. Advises students in selecting coursework appropriate to their ability and educational goals.
4. Collaborates with parents, teachers, and other school personnel to establish plans to modify student behavior.
5. Orients new students to the school environment.
C. RESPONSIVE SERVICES
1. Provides information to teachers, parents, and students concerning procedures for identifying and referring students for counseling, screening, evaluation and accessing educational support programs and services.
2. Identifies and refers students who demonstrate a need for counseling or other educational or supportive services.
3. Follows-up on each student referral.
4. Provides individual and group counseling for students.
5. Attends CAP/CAST, Multi-Disciplinary-Team and other supportive services meetings as required.
6. Performs educational screening and testing.
7. Is a member of the District‘s Crisis Management Team.
D. SYSTEM SUPPORT
1. Supports the district’s and guidance program’s Mission Statement and implements the district’s Strategic Plan.
2. Supports the district’s regulations and policies.
3. Participates in the guidance program assessment and improvement process.
4. Maintains a record of counselor activities.
5. Maintains a well-organized and functional guidance information center.
7. Maintains student educational and psychological records and information in a confidential manner.
8. Communicates with parents and school personnel concerning student progress and issues.
9. Is a liaison to and utilizes community agencies and resources to meet student needs.
10. Researches, evaluates, and recommends guidance materials to be purchased.
11. Is a liaison to the Special Education Program.
12. Offers programs, presentations, and guidance activities in response to student, parent, and district needs.
13 Assists in the administration of the district testing program.
E. HUMAN RELATIONS
1. Demonstrates positive interactions with students, parents, and school personnel.
2. Demonstrates an awareness of student needs.
3. Promotes positive self-esteem in students.
4. Works with other counselors in a team effort to develop and coordinate guidance program planning and activities.
5. Assists in resolving differences between students, parents, and school personnel.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: As per contract
EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the School Committee’s Policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel.
