DIRECTOR OF SCIENCE, MATH AND PE
JOB GOALS:
To provide leadership, coordination, and innovation in the eight (8) policy categories of Administration, Curriculum, Supervision, Staff Development, Evaluation, Community Relations, Management and Human Relations so that all may derive maximum benefit from one’s efforts.
REPORTS TO: High School Principal
COMPENSATION: As per contract
EVALUATION: By High School Principal
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
A. ADMINISTRATIVE LEADERSHIP:
1. Support and implement the Middletown Public School’s Strategic Plan and School Committee yearly goals.
2. Support School Improvement goals as a member or an Ad-Hoc member of the site-based council.
3. Support the school’s vision and goals.
4. Meet with other High School Directors to promote interdisciplinary programs.
5. Assist the principal or his/her designee in the scheduling process.
6. Oversee the orientation and supervision of new teachers.
7. Serve as Secondary evaluator as part of the Educator Evaluation process.
8. Conduct department/content area(s) meetings on a regularly-scheduled basis.
9. Promote and facilitate the Professional Learning Community goals in department professional development.
10. Support the Graduate by Proficiency requirements and all other high school regulations.
11. Assure equal access to all courses and programs in accordance with RIDE HS Regulations.
12. Perform such other tasks and assume such other responsibilities as may from time to time be assigned by the Superintendent/Building Principal.
B. CURRICULUM IMPROVEMENT PROCESS:
1. Support the Curriculum Improvement Process, aligning curriculum with content and performance standards.
2. Assess the needs of the department/content area(s), develop course objectives and design departmental course assessment.
3. Integrate the use of technologies in both student learning and teacher research.
4. Review student achievement data in order to plan instructional changes.
5. Support differentiated instructional practices and strategies in all courses.
6. Promote interdisciplinary instruction in all courses.
7. Oversee curriculum related to Science, Mathematics, and Health.
8. Coordinate and align instruction with the middle school.
9. Align curriculum, including course selection and development, with district/State Grade Level Expectation, Grade Span Expectation and Common Core Standards.
10. Oversee the development and implementation of common assessments.
C. SUPERVISORY LEADERSHIP:
1. Encourage the use of an effective variety of teaching strategies and practices.
2. Responsible for recommending a budget, as part of the school department budget.
3. Assist teachers in implementing a standards-based instructional curriculum.
4. Assist teachers in organizing instruction to meet student’s needs and learning styles.
5. Assist in determining personnel needs, including interviewing, screening, and recommending teacher candidates.
6. Assure all members of the department are implementing the high school regulations.
7. Provide a professional positive role model to staff and students.
D. STAFF DEVELOPMENT, PROFESSIONAL GROWTH AND IMPROVEMENT:
1. Provide professional liaison between the Middletown Public Schools and State, Regional, and National professional organizations of your specific discipline, as well as communicate with your counterpart departments in other districts and states.
2. Conduct regular meetings with staff that promote instructional improvement and current research in practices. Encourage staff attendance at professional conferences.
3. Provide professional growth activities necessary for implementing new programs and for on-going programs as needed.
4. Identify needs related to professional development for staff to assist in the facilitation of interdisciplinary opportunities.
5. Facilitate common planning time for departmental teachers.
6. Maintain the ethics of your profession.
E. EVALUATION RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Evaluate and monitor the effectiveness of departmental programs and arrange for such revisions as deemed necessary on an on-going basis.
2. Assist the Administration in evaluating instructional performance.
3. Assist the Administration in Teacher Evaluation and Support System.
F. COMMUNITY RELATIONS:
1. Assist in identifying and utilizing community resources for the department.
2. Utilize community resources on an on-going basis to enhance classroom programs.
3. Maintain communication with parents/guardians on a regular basis.
G. MANAGEMENT LEADERSHIP:
1. Study, screen and recommend materials, methods and techniques of teaching in the instructional area.
2. Post and maintain agendas and minutes of department meetings.
3. Assist in creating schedules for the department.
4. Use and analyze data to improve instruction and student achievement.
5. Coordinate timelines and activities with other high school directors.
6. Conduct regular and ongoing classroom visitations with a focus on improved teaching and learning.
H. HUMAN RELATIONS:
1. Utilize caring, supporting and motivating techniques in all interpersonal contacts, i.e., student, staff and community.
2. Assist in resolving difficulties between department members or between teachers and community.
3. Advocate for the school vis-a-vis colleagues, students, and parents.
4. Assist in student behavior management.
MINIMUM
QUALIFICATIONS:
8. Ability to work with colleagues, parents, students and administrators.
9. Experience in using technology to support teaching and learning.
10. Knowledge of curriculum standards and performance assessment.
11. Demonstrated exemplary oral and written communication and listening skills.
12. Experience in leading professional development activities for staff.
13. Positive attitude.

15. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the School Committee may find appropriate and acceptable.
