DEAN OF ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  1. Multiple R.I. Teaching Certifications (preferred)
  2. Master’s Degree
  3. A minimum of five years of successful teaching experience at the high school level.
  4. Evidence of supporting a vision that reflects an ALL STUDENTS classroom program
  5. Experience in using technology to support teaching and learning
  6. Experience with planning, coordinating and validating instructional innovation efforts
  7. Experience with a variety of assessment strategies.
  8. Ability to use data to support the school-wide reform efforts
  9. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Rhode Island high school regulations.
  10. Skills and knowledge in the areas of academic planning, personal goal setting, post-secondary options, post high school opportunities, family systems/change, and crisis intervention
  11. Ability to work with colleagues, parents, students, and administrators.
  12. Demonstrated capacity to provide leadership and support for the implementation of “Principles of Learning™”, the “Certificate of Initial Mastery” as well as the Rhode Island High School Diploma System.
  13. Experience in developing and validating common assessments (tasks).
  14. Training and experience in the areas of adolescent development including personal/social issues, behavior,
  15. Demonstrate exemplary oral and written communication and listening skills.
  16. Experience in leading professional development activities for staff.
  17. Positive attitude.
  18. Successful interview.

REPORTS TO: High School Principal

 

JOB GOALS:

 

To provide leadership, coordination, and innovation in the eight (8) policy categories of Administration, Curriculum, Supervision, Staff Development, Evaluation, Community Relations, Management and Human Relations so that all may derive maximum benefit from one’s efforts.

 

COMPENSATION: As per contract (to be negotiated with NEAM)

 

EVALUATION:        By High School Principal (new evaluation instrument to be developed jointly by NEAM and administration)

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  1. Coordinate, supervise, and support safety net of programs for students.
  2. Provide guidance to parents, students, and teachers.
  3. Collect and analyze data in reference to student success
  4. Coordinate school’s response to intervention RTI services
  5. Coordinates and manages school’s advisory program
  6. Plans coordinates and manages a transitional program for incoming 9th graders
  7. Promote Community Service Learning activities and post opportunities for students.
  8. Advise teachers, students and parents with regard to Proficiency Based Graduation Requirements for Middletown High School.
  9. Coordinate, supervise and support continuum of student services such as: after school tutoring program, student behavior management program, monitor student attendance, and  a homework club
  10. Provide academic status reports to administrators
  11. Establishes and maintains positive relationships with colleagues, students, parents, and the community.
  12. Serve as a liaison between MHS and the Truancy Court.
  13. Attend meetings and activities as directed.
  14. Such alternatives to the above responsibilities as the School Committee or Superintendent may find appropriate.

 

A. ADMINISTRATIVE LEADERSHIP:

 

  1. Support and implement the Middletown Public School’s Strategic Plan and School Committee yearly goals.
  2. Support School Improvement goals as a member or an Ad-Hoc member of the site-based council.
  3. Support the school’s vision and goals.
  4. Meet with other High School Directors to promote educational development and career development programing.
  5. Conduct RTI meetings.
  6. Support the Graduate by Proficiency requirements and all other high school regulations.
  7. Serve as the school’s chief liaison with the Truancy Court
  8. Provides leadership in the development of Academic and Faculty Policies
  9. Strong skills in interpersonal, written and oral communication; the ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  10. Perform such other tasks and assume such other responsibilities as may from time to time be assigned by the Superintendent/Building Principal.

 

B. CURRICULUM IMPROVEMENT PROCESS:

 

  1. Support the Curriculum Improvement Process, aligning curriculum with content and performance standards.
  2. Research, develop, and creates, coordinates and manages the implementation of new academic Programs to support student success
  3. Integrate the use of technologies in both student learning and teacher research.
  4. Review student achievement data in order to plan for optimal instructional opportunities.
  5. Support differentiated instructional practices and strategies in all courses.
  6. Familiarity with special issues that academically at-risk students, multicultural students, and/or students with disabilities face
  7. Directs the periodic development and presentation of program reviews

 

C. SUPERVISORY LEADERSHIP:

 

  1. Encourage the use of an effective variety of teaching strategies and practices.
  2. Act to maintain the health and welfare of students by creating a respectful environment where the students are held accountable for their actions and guided to resolution
  3. Supervise the Student Assistance Counselor
  4. Assist teachers in organizing instruction to meet student’s needs and learning styles.
  5. Assist in determining personnel needs, including interviewing, screening, and recommending teacher candidates.
  6. Provide a positive role model to staff and students.

 

D. STAFF DEVELOPMENT, PROFESSIONAL GROWTH AND IMPROVEMENT:

 

  1. Provide professional liaison between the Middletown Public Schools and State, Regional, and National professional organizations of your specific discipline, as well as communicate with your counterpart departments in other districts and states.
  2. Conduct regular meetings with staff that promote instructional improvement and current research in practices. Encourage staff attendance at professional conferences.
  3. Provide professional growth activities necessary for implementing new programs and for on-going programs as needed.
  4. Identify needs related to professional development for staff to assist in the facilitation of interdisciplinary opportunities.
  5. Provide faculty development opportunities to improve teaching excellence, using current instructional technology and creating a collaborative learning environment
  6. Maintain the ethics of your profession.

 

E. EVALUATION RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  1. Evaluate and monitor the effectiveness of programs and arrange for such revisions as deemed necessary on an on-going basis.

 

F. COMMUNITY RELATIONS:

 

  1. Assist in identifying and utilizing community resources for the department.
  2. Utilize community resources on an on-going basis to enhance classroom programs.
  3. Maintain communication with parents/guardians on a regular basis.
  4. Serves with parent, faculty, student, and administrative groups as requested in advancing educational and related activities.
  5. Serve as liaison with outside agencies to meet the students’ personal needs

 

G. MANAGEMENT LEADERSHIP:

 

  1. Study, screen and recommend materials, methods and techniques for supporting struggling learners.
  2. Post and maintain agendas and minutes as warranted.
  3. Use and analyze data to improve instruction and student achievement.
  4. Coordinate timelines and activities with other high school directors.
  5. Responsible for developing and implementing policies and services that promote academic success, retention, and graduation of students
  6. Manages and administers standing and ad hoc committees as necessary
  7. Assures students are provided support services to maintain the highest level of student achievement while safeguarding the integrity of the educational process
  8. Implement and coordinate strategies to motivate and retain students, and improve attendance rates
  9. Assists in the supervision and evaluation of extra-curricular activities.
  10. Work with counselors to evaluate overall effectiveness of student support services

 

H. HUMAN RELATIONS:

 

  1. Assists in the selection of new staff.
  2. Provide students with on-going educational opportunity and pro-active academic outreach and intervention
  3. Be an advocate for the school vis-a-vis colleagues, students, and parents.
  4. Assist in student behavior management.
  5. Plan and facilitate Family Association meetings and parent trainings
  6. Demonstrate preparation and skill in working with students from diverse cultural, economic, and ability backgrounds.
  7. Utilize caring, supporting and motivating techniques in all interpersonal contacts, i.e., student, staff and community.
