CITY OF EAST PROVIDENCE   RHODE ISLAND JOURNAL OF NEIGHBORHOOD MEETING JANUARY 29, 2008

 

The Neighborhood Meeting met in the Riverside Library on Tuesday, January 29, 2008 and Mayor Isadore S. Ramos calls the meeting to order at 6:00 P.M. then turns it over to Councilwoman Perry.

Councilwoman Perry stated this meeting is in regard to a paper street overlook Hearing from the January 2, 2008 City Council meeting for the Highway Abandonment – Cedar Avenue from Bluff Street Westward to Narragansett Bay.

 

Petitioners:  James W. & Corinna E. Barry, 47 Bluff Street (02915),  Joseph & Margaret Rochette, 51 Bluff Street (02915)

 

A few were in favor of abandoning the property.  Mrs. Rochette stated she has lived here 60 years.  Jim Barry states we have maintained the open space there.  Corinna Barry states the property has a 65-95% grade, rocky coast 33’wide 65-70’ deep.   Tony Perry Harbor Commission felt it should be abandoned.

 

Many people spoke for not abandoning the property.  They want the view for all residents.  Some residents were concerned about temporary structures, a boat or a RV being parked there.  There was a fence until recently blocking the view.  There was interest to keep it open and questions as to why can’t the City take care of it.

 

Mr. Brown states it’s difficult to ask City crews to maintain it.    Base maintenance would begin in the spring, chop high growth and then the neighborhood would have to assist. 

 

Bruce was upset city didn’t do anything about right of ways along the shore.

 

The City must conclude it no longer has a public purpose before it abandons the property.

 

The meeting adjourns at 7:30 P.M.
